Our guide will meet up with you at your hotel in Aswan and take you to Saint Simeon by boat. Walk up the hill and once there, explore the monks’ cells and peruse the few frescoes that still adorn the walls of the church.
The monastery was built around the 6th/7th century. It was originally called Anba Hedra, after a bishop who forswore the world on his wedding day and retreated to this location and proceeded to live out the rest of his life as a hermit. Only later on, around the 10th century did it acquire it’s present name. Partly destroyed by Saladin, the upper layer of the monastery built with mudbrick is almost gone. However, the lower stone base is perfectly preserved. Attenant to the monastery, is a cemetery with around 200 tombstones dating back to the 6th-7th centuries and a church with beautiful yet fragmented frescoes.
