In 1935, Major Gayer-Anderson, retired collector and self-described orientalist was granted permission to reside in the house, which had just been restored . He oversaw the installation of electricity and plumbing and saw to the restauration of the gardens and the interior of the house. He added his touch by putting up his collection of furnishings, carpets and art pieces that he had collected on his travels. Before leaving Egypt in 1942 due to health reasons, Gayer-Anderson gifted the contents of the house to the Egyptian government. In gratitude, King Farouk bestowed on him the title of Pasha.
It is indeed a place full of memories, a charmed setting as we stroll along through its chambers gazing at the different eras the collection covers.
