Aswan High Dam, Unfinished Obelisk, Philae Temple
First on our itinerary will be two of the finest engineering feats from two different periods. Your guide will pick you up at your hotel and take you to the High Dam, erected between 1960-1970. It was built to protect the river banks from the seasonal flooding of the river and to produce hydroelectricity and irrigate agricultural lands.
Once done we go on to the Unfinished Obelisk, which, had it been finished, would have been the tallest and largest. However, a crack appeared in the granite during construction and thus the work ceased and it remained Unfinished. Sad.
On a happier note, we shall go on to visit the Temple of Philae, which was rescued from drowning in the waters of lake Nasser as the High Dam was built and rebuilt on higher grounds on the nearby island of Agilkia. Philae was dedicated to the goddess Isis and was the site of a yearly pilgrimage that brought worshippers from all over the land.
